Chris and the boys left for Scout camp Monday morning. They met at the church at 4am. Chris said he was the only one awake in the car of course. Our ward combined with two other wards in our building to go up. Jacob, a good friend of the boys and in one of the other wards, spent the night and went in the car with them. Chris said he was the only one awake of course.
Camp this year was at Maple Dell. It is in Payson Canyon about a 3 1/2 hour drive. We went there 3 years ago to Family Camp for family vacation. It was a blast.
Here the boys are looking to see where their camping spot is going to be on the big map.
They ended up with camp Seminole...

Which was up what they called Cardiac Hill. One of the boys asked why it was called that. Chris said because it gave the adult leaders a cardiac arrest to go up it. They said the hill was bad enough, but the steps made it even worse. They had to go up and down the hill about 5 times a day!
This is a view going down another section of it.

Finally, in camp and getting set up.
Here is the group all together. Nathan was Senior Patrol Leader this year, which he enjoyed.
The guy with the blue hat on was John. He was a volunteer. He was the camp "friend". He was the one that made sure everything was going smooth, and let them know what was going on.
He taught them a new game called "Stomp". Chris said the boys played it endlessly. It was one of the hits of camp.
Another hit this year, was the apple beer at the trading post. Chris couldn't believe how much the boys drank.
Here is CJ and some of the other boys in their weather class. One of quite a few.
CJ learning boondogling.
For their merit badge on mammals that had to build a habitat that an animal could use for a home. The boys in the class got together and bulit a large roofed logged area with a hole in the bottom for an animal to live in.
This is another afternoon on the COPE course. This is the beginning with the ropes.
Lesson in trust and teamwork.
Nathan trying to get up the wall. CJ opted not to do this one.
Nathan because he was a Senior Patrol Leader got to go to a special meeting for SPL. Wah-Ka-Rah.
One of the things Chris and the boys like to do when camping is whittle, even if they don't make anything. They all hav learned knife safety. Chris was watching Cameron, and decided that he wanted to try the same thing. This is the first time he has done anything like this and was so proud of it. You start with a solid block of wood. You whittle out the middle to make an empty space, at the same time whittling a bead inside to rattle around. It worked!
The whole group of boys before coming home.
They had good weather the whole week. Last night it started raining, and rained all night. Thank goodness the tents are waterproof. They had to dig a small trench around the boys tent to keep out the water. It was raining this morning as they left. Both of the boys came back wanting to work up there. Nathan has everything in place for his Eagle. He just has not decided on a project. Chris told him that if he got his Eagle done, that he would let him go up and volunteer next year. CJ said he wants to do the same thing. He wouldn't be able to go up for 2 years though. Nathan said if you volunteer, then the next year you are eligible to be paid for it. They want to do the same thing that John did. Be a camp friend. I think it is a fantastic idea.
